Step No 4- PREOPERATIVE EVALUATION

All patients without exception have to undergo an exhaustive preoperative evaluation to reduce the degree of obesity and cardiovascular risk to eliminate the risk of complications and optimize the safety and success of surgery. The preoperative evaluation is the same for the different types of bariatric surgery:

• Medical evaluation by the Bariatric Surgeon (Dr. Treviño)
• Blood analysis: the amount of hemoglobin and coagulation status are assessed, as well as any metabolic and hormonal imbalance that must be corrected previously.
• Chest X-Ray
• Electrocardiogram
• ESGD (Standing Esophagoastroduodenal Series): To assess the anatomical status of the stomach
• Upper endoscopy: In cases of pre-existing stomach disease or previous gastric surgeries
• Spirometry: for Pulmonary Evaluation: evaluate respiratory condition and lung capacity in case of Sleep Apnea
• Cardiological Evaluation: requires electrocardiogram and measurement of blood lipid levels. Sometimes it is necessary to perform additional tests such as Echocardiography and/or stress test to assess the status of your system and cardiovascular risk before surgery.
• Evaluation by the anesthesiologist: He will assess the score made by the Cardiologist in addition to evaluating your respiratory system to minimize risks of general anesthesia.
• Nutritional evaluation: to evaluate your previous nutritional condition and your knowledge in nutrition and the diet that you should continue after your surgery, which will be week after week after the procedure.

• Psychological or psychiatric evaluation:
• You will receive a visit from the psychology graduate prior to surgery to help with pre-surgical anxiety and stress management, allowing adequate post-procedure recovery.
• This evaluation is required in order to ensure that the patient does not have disorders that could interfere with medical management, and that they understand everything that the surgery implies, in addition to the changes that it requires with respect to the new lifestyle and diet to follow.
• Set weight to lose prior to your surgery and date of surgery, depending on each case, it is suggested in the preoperative preparation to lose 10 to 15% of your weight to reduce cardiovascular risk and technically facilitate the development of each procedure.
